What is endovascular stent grafting?

In certain cases, when aneurysms occur in the chest and abdomen that can be repaired by using a device called an endovascular stent graft.

This is performed by surgeons who have adequate knowledge of the treatment of this condition having done many of these repairs by an open technique – the transition to endovascular techniques being a natural extension of their expertise.

A small cut in made in the groin where the artery to the leg is exposed and wires (catheters) are passed up through the vessels to guide the delivery and subsequent deployment of the stent graft. The stent graft is a device that is a tube of fabric supported on a metal scaffold, the weak part of the aorta is excluded allowing the blood to flow through the new channels created.
